Chapter Fourteen.

“Why do you keep checking your phone?” I asked as I eyed Robin suspiciously from her position on one of the kitchen stools.

She looked up from her phone and smiled, it was her typical mischievous smile but it filled me with so much happiness to see her in my kitchen again.

After the mini fight that we had and us not speaking to each other for about a week, I woke up one night when I heard something coming from the kitchen and I immediately smiled when I saw that it was Robin.

There was still a bit of tension between us, sometimes I’d catch her zoning out or just staring at Isaac for a long time but I knew we’d be okay.

“Nothing, I’m just checking a few things.” She shrugged but I still narrowed my eyes on her. Usually, Robin was uncomfortably forthcoming about all the text messages she got, so this was highly suspicious.

Isaac poked me with the wheelbarrow token he insisted on using whenever we played monopoly. “Mom, it’s your turn.”

I eyed Robin one last time before I rolled the dice and moved my thimble accordingly, sighing when I landed on another one of Isaac’s properties. “You’re going to bankrupt me, little man. I barely have enough money to pay you.” I gathered a few bills from my meager stack and handed it to him.

He smiled, showing off his missing teeth. “You do the crime, you do the time.” He rolled the dice and landed on a space that allowed him to get more money from the bank because of course.

“Oh sweetie, that is not how that phrase works.” Robin chimed in as she hovered over our game.

We all watched as I rolled the dice and moved my token all the way into the jail cell. I groaned and Isaac laughed.

“You know what, maybe it does work in this case.” Robin giggled as she high fived him. She was supposed to be our banker but I’d pushed for her termination after I caught her slipping Isaac some money. She claimed it was legal but I knew better.

All three of our heads turned towards the door as a knock sounded. I paused for a moment, I wasn’t expecting anyone and Trudy was out of town for a family event.

“You expecting someone?” I asked Robin and she smiled coyly and shook her head as she helped arrange Isaac’s money.

With a sigh, I slipped out of the stool. “You guys better not cheat while I’m gone, I’ll know.” I warned before I walked over to the door.

“We won’t, we promise.” Robin called out but one quick glance behind me and I saw that they were already grabbing as many fake hundred dollar bills as they could.

Another knock sounded and I quickly unlatched the lock before I pulled the door open. The smile on my face dropped when I saw Felix standing there holding a bag full of groceries.

“Robin, I texted you saying I was coming up like 10 minu-” He looked up from his phone and sucked in a breath when he saw me.
